Our Research
Sibling conflict, aggression and abuse are indeed prevalent in Canada. Here we provide more details about our research and how we will move forward with this knowledge.
Fact Sheet #1 outlines information about the study itself, including the subjects involved, the methodology, and the key issues we looked at.
Fact Sheet #2 provides some preliminary information about the prevalence of sibling violence and bullying/abuse.
Note that violence and bullying are both referenced in this Fact Sheet and throughout the study.
We define interpersonal violence as any threat, attempt or use of non-consensual physical force against another person, repeatedly or even one time, depending on the severity and impact.
Bullying, like abuse, however, extends further to encompass a range of different types of aggressive behaviours, including physical, psychological, relational, social, and property-based forms of aggression. With bullying, there is a clear intention to cause harm and dominate, repeatedly, over time. It is a pattern of behaviours rooted in an imbalance of power, and the receiver is unable to stop the aggression from occurring.
